Our Fairy Garden Project

I remember as a little girl I would play in the timber behind out house imagining the little creatures that might just live within the rocks and hidden places. I imagined that maybe there were fairies or gnomes and it was a place full of wonder. As I grew up, like many my imagination quieted as the realities of the world took over my mind. Sound familiar?

It’s easy to get stuck in the realities of life and leave imagination behind. I think we hit an age where we over think things and fill our days with less wonder.  As a mom that’s something I want to nurture for A (well – all of our kiddos). She’s very smart as it is – at 2.5 she knows her basic numbers, all of her capital letters, shapes and colors. The “practical stuff” she knows and that stuff will always be there. Imagination and play though – I want to really help nurture that. I want her to question things and play make believe. I want her to have a childhood filled with wonder.

A few months ago I learned about National Fairy day and was challenged to create a fairy garden. There was a part of me that decided it was a silly idea but a bigger part of me loved the idea. I decided it would be the perfect fun project for A. It was fun, creative, imaginative and we had so much fun.

It took about a week for us to create all the tiny details together but we both had a lot of fun doing it.

Several items were upcycled – like the fairy house and the bottom of the waterfall and the rest of the components were gathered from nature. It was a lot of fun to think outside of the box and watch this whole thing come together.

We used a square succulent pot that I have had for a few years, an Honest bottle for the fairy house base, lots of sticks and bark from the dead tree in our backyard, rocks and pebbles from our yard and local park, Popsicle sticks, yarn & string, homemade playdough that we baked and lots of hot glue! Oh! And those shells? They are from Ryan’s internship in the Bahamas! We bought the succulents to add to our project too.

The most time consuming projects were the house, the swing and the waterfall but they are all my favorites too. 

We had so much fun making this fairy garden! I would imagine we will make a bigger one soon and I’ll be posting some steps for our waterfall, fairy house, and swing soon, too! It was a great creative project for both A and I. Since I snapped these photos we have also added the beginning of moss around so it’ll continue to evolve and we will add other goodies along the way too!
