Thermometers & Technology Growth
I remember back to when car phones were practically the size of a center console and had a cord and how I used sat at our old desktop computer without Internet. Then when we did have internet years later we waited for AOL to dial up to get turtle speed internet.
They closed down school once because a thermometer was dropped and there was a mercury spill. Growing up, every time my mom checked our temp we had to be super careful we didn’t drop the thermometer and break it or it would shatter and Mercury would be everywhere.
The car phones eventually became cell phones, then eventually became smaller. They came out with a digital thermometer and an ear thermometer which were big deals. Internet in most places got a little bit faster.
I look at technology today and am constantly in awe of how far it has come. Smartphones that can do nearly anything, there is WiFi on airplanes, and thermometers that read temps and send the results via Bluetooth to my cell phone and track it. I know these things are small and basic comparatively to many technological things I probably can’t even fathom but seriously, we have come so far.
Recently, Influenster sent me this Vicks Smart Temp thermometer to try out and it kind of blew me away. It has a free app that works with the thermometer via Bluetooth which is pretty awesome. It lets you create profiles for each member of your family, and there’s a non-profile setting, too. You have three options: oral, under arm and rectal. We’ve tried oral and under arm on our family, as that’s been accurate ways of reading for us and I feel like once a thermometer is used rectally it stays a rectal thermometer forever. Once you select how you are using it, and insert the thermometer it begins reading it right on the phone screen, then once it’s completed it shows the reading and keeps it in a log under specific family member. It also can keep track of medications and you can set it to send you reminders. The end is flexible and I feel like the thermometer is durable so I don’t worry if it gets dropped, which is huge with little ones!
I really love that I can keep it in my travel medicine bag because it’s small and can connect with ease to my phone, or I can just it day to day!
What gadget has blown you away recently?
